Jordaan, Amsterdam
This area was built at the same time as the famous and more luxurious Canal District. This neighborhood was the home of the artisans who did the construction work and later of cottage industry. The area was laid out on a regular plan that once included more water. (The broad street in the north was once a canal like the one to the south; it was filled in to increase the amount of parking.) Many of the private interior courtyards have been encroached upon over the years, and some have nearly disappeared, which gives rise in part to the high FAR. Cars are permitted throughout this area, but many streets are too narrow to allow parking, so much of the area is optically carfree. This mixed-use area has enjoyed sharply increased popularity and urban renewal.
