The following series of images was shot in Coimbra, Portugal, in February 2002. It illustrates the mystery and continuing interest created by the crooked streets that typify medieval urban areas. In this case, the irregular path slightly reduces the rather steep grades. The street was likely laid out to minimize the amount of site grading required, at a time when this labor was largely done by hand.

The views are so varied that one might not immediately realize that they were taken so close to one another. Of course, when on foot, there is no break in continuity.
