During the month of Shrawan, women queue for hours on Mondays to worship at the temple in Dattatraya Square, Bhaktapur, Nepal.

This issue's photo essay is about the celebration of the holy month of Shrawan. As with all major religious celebrations here, the occasion is intensely social (and quite loud, what with all the drumming and piping). By Shrawan, all the rice has been planted out, the rains should be falling regularly, and there is not a lot to do until harvest time. | ||

Photo Essay: Rebuilding Bhaktapur, NepalShrawan is the holy month for women. (Men don't get one.) Our Ram Kumar took theses photos during the month, which just ended. Any time women in Nepal get dressed up, the streets are very colorful. As with most festivals in Nepal, it is celebrated in the streets. The steadily increasing motorcycle traffic in the historic core of Bhaktapur threatens the peaceful continuation of this major, month-long festival.
